Tummy Tuesdays: 9 Weeks Postpartum

Photos © 2012 Brian Adams

Next week will be our last weekly Tummy Tuesdays post on Brian & Ash, in which we will not only post a comprehensive visual breakdown of our 10 postpartum weeks, but I will also give a detailed write-up on the ways that my exercise routines and nutrition have evolved throughout the weeks, the weight numbers, and all of that good stuff. I was recently told by a trusted midwife that the postpartum body looses a bunch of weight right away during the first two weeks postpartum and then plateaus until month three when the weight loss kicks up again, so we will move to posting monthly postpartum bump updates following next week's post. The past few weeks have been slow but steady, but I'm hoping to be fit, toned, and fitting in my clothes again in a year!

That said, the bump has come a long way in 9 weeks:

  • 8 weeks postpartum
  • 7 weeks postpartum
  • 6 weeks postpartum
  • 5 weeks postpartum
  • 4 weeks postpartum
  • 3 weeks postpartum
  • 2 weeks postpartum
  • 1 week postpartum
  • 2 days after delivery
  • 41-weeks pregnant

    Bethesda on Akron Empire

It's really rare for one of your friends' bands to be one that you actually listen to when they're not around. And it's not because you don't love your friends—you do—it's just that you'd rather listen to good music.

This is why it took me almost 2 years to listen to Bethesda's first EP. Because I'm friends with Eric Ling and Shanna Delaney and, quite frankly, a little jaded after listening to a lot of bad music created by good people that I love. So when I finally listened to the band's first full-length album, Love in the Time of Tra La La, I was humbled, I was ashamed, and at the same time, I was squealing with delight.

Check out Ash's full piece on Bethesda over at Akron Empire!

    Tummy Tuesdays: 8 Weeks Postpartum

Another week and another Tummy Tuesdays post! I can hardly believe that it has been 8 weeks already since Elliott's birth; it feels like yesterday (and somehow, it feels like a year ago, too). That said, the bump has come a long way in a relatively short time:

  • 7 weeks postpartum
  • 6 weeks postpartum
  • 5 weeks postpartum
  • 4 weeks postpartum
  • 3 weeks postpartum
  • 2 weeks postpartum
  • 1 week postpartum
  • 2 days after delivery

    Elliott's Listening Room

    Photo © 2012 Ash Adams

Brian and I love music. In the morning, Brian turns on something while we get ready for the day, then we rotate our selections throughout the day while we work. In the car, we either listen to NPR or to music from our iPhones. Basically, if we're near a computer or stereo, we generally go right to it, and because we have similar tastes, there's really no need to ask each other if a given selection is okay. (Usually, it's just what the other was thinking, with the exception of some gutter punk albums from my past.)

Now that Elliott is in the picture, however, there is a third voice in the day's selections. From even his time in the womb, it was clear that he is in our music-loving camp, but there are certain albums and artists that Elliott clearly enjoys more than others. Brian and I aren't sure if every baby will like the same things that Elliott does, but we thought we'd share his favorites anyways!

  • 1. Joanna Newsom. Elliott loves Joanna Newsom, and especially The Milk-Eyed Mender and Have One on Me. His eyes light up the second he hears her and his fingers dance in the air to the harps. In an interview with Joanna Newsom that I read some years ago, she said that she wanted to create music that both children and adults would enjoy, and although I always suspected a child would enjoy her cooky vocals, daydreamy lyrics, and fanciful harp solos, it's wonderful to see Elliott enjoying them!
  • 2. Nico. Another female artist with a particularly unique voice, Nico lulls Elliott into his own little smiling daydream anytime we turn on any track from Chelsea Girls.
  • 3. The White Stripes. This one is a hit or miss, but there are times that Elliott can't get enough of White Blood Cells, and particularly "We're Going to Be Friends."
  • 4. Feist. Yes, Elliott digs lady vocalists, though I haven't met anyone, in fact, who doesn't dig Feist. Smoky-sweet vocals, poignant lyrics (and fun), and a style all her own, the former singer in Broken Social Scene has had the buzz of the international media for the last ten years with good reason. Good pick, Elliott. His favorites? Anything on Let it Die and The Reminder.
  • 5. Bethesda. While in utero, nothing would get Elliott kicking quite like one of Bethesda's rocking tracks off of Dreamtiger & Other Tails, and now that he's out in the world, it's easy to see why: he loves chimes, tambourines, and powerhouse lady vocals. It could also be because the band stayed in our apartment the night before we conceived him. (HA.)
  • 6. St. Vincent. Although we listen to St. Vincent's newest album, Strange Mercy, Elliott seems to prefer her earlier work, which is softer and more melodic. Marry Me is his favorite of her three full-length albums. (Though, I think it's ours, too.)
  • 7. Kristina Morland. Another lady with a good sense of chimes and twinkly noises in combination with a unique voice and lyrics that make us swoon, Kristina Morland will be played in our house for as long as we're alive. (We walked down our wedding aisle in a rose garden to "Taboo.") I'm glad Elliott giggles when he hears her voice.
  • 8. Evan Phillips. We've been playing Evan Phillips' newest album, Goodnight My Dearest Stranger often for the past month, and Elliott is always pleasantly aware and calmed by Phillips' woodsy vocals and acoustic guitar strums, particularly those in "Blue Mountain Molly."
  • 9. Bon Iver. Bon Iver's newest self-titled full-length album is one that Elliott is always in the mood for. Swooping, soft high-pitched vocals and wave-breaking percussion, the album sounds like standing at the edge of the sea.
  • 10. Jeanne Moreau. On one of our first few nights home, there were a few tough hours where Elliott was struggling with stomach upset and we were struggling to calm him. Instinctively, I started to sing "Le Tourbillon" by Jeanne Moreau and he instantly quieted. And although not entirely content yet (gluten and soy were the offenders which have now been removed from my diet) Elliott was calm as long as I kept singing the song. I sang it so many times that night that it's now one of his favorite songs. When he hears it, his eyes smile and dance.
  • 11. Robyn. Okay, so Elliott only really likes one song by Robyn, but it's probably because it's the only one we play. On any day of the week, Elliott will dance with me with the biggest smile to "Dancing on My Own."
  • 12. Seu Jorge. I hadn't listened to The Life Aquatic: Studio Sessions since I was in college, but after seeing how much Elliott enjoys listening to me speak French (and listening to Jeanne Moreau), I started playing Seu Jorge's tracks from the soundtrack to see if he'd feel the same way about Portuguese. I can't be certain that it's the language or Seu Jorge's low, soothing voice and smooth finger-picked guitar, but whatever it is, Elliott digs "Rebel, Rebel" and "Life on Mars?"

  • In addition to these, we play some classical music, not because we abide the hype that classical music will make our kid smarter, but because, well, we like it. Elliott is a boy after my own heart; he loves powerful pieces like Rachmaninoff's Concerto No. 2 (especially the first movement), Dvorak's Cello Concerto (again, the first movement, the Allegro), and Handel's Messiah.

    Good picks, Elliott!

Things We Love: You Look At Me Like An Emergency by Cig Harvey

    Photos © 2012 Brian Adams

Cig Harvey's new book You Look at Me Like an Emergency is, as the dedication claims, a love story. A wink perhaps to Adrienne Rich's poem "Trying to Talk with a Man," the work as a whole represents what I most love about fine art photography; I close the book with a whirlwind of emotion and memory, some imagined. Something in Harvey's images, which seem deeply personal—a girl stretched out over a sofa in dreary afternoon light, a woman cast out to sea on a buoy—communicate my innermost longings, desires, and secrets. There are the playful, almost devilish impulses which shyly snicker in a dark library like a little girl; there is loneliness that looks after a man who is not coming back. There is the daring stare of an adolescent girl sitting in the backseat of a Cadillac. And there is love, lurking in the shadows at first and then imbuing a home with twinkling lights and barefoot reading.

Comprised of 74 photographs accompanied by excerpts from the photographer's personal journals, You Look at Me Like an Emergency is, indeed, a story, but not a chronology of events but of feelings. Although each photograph inspires more questions and daydreams than it does answers and conclusions, what better way to capture the spark—or the flurry, the drone, the ache—of something submerged so deep beneath the lights? Sometimes, a head simply must be hidden by a roof, a chest, an ocean.

Harvey's muted moments, whimsical sentiments, and bold lasso on color together bring joy and create a sense that we are all connected (to the artist? to women and girls? to the world?) by the shared mystery that we house in our hearts.

Brian and I both have felt so inspired by Harvey's photography for years, and seeing this book in print, in our living room, in our hands, has been nothing short of a gift. When we finished Emergency, we looked at one another and said, this is why we love art. Thanks, Cig.

    Happy Mother's Day, My Love.

Three years ago, Ash and I met at a photography show she had with her sister Beth, and we have been together since (really, we moved in together right away). One year later, we were married, then moved to New York, then a year later we drove cross-country to Alaska. Three years ago, Ash and I never really thought about being parents, but 48 days ago Ash gave birth to the most amazing baby boy Adams ever.

Watching Ash give birth to Elliott and the way they have interacted together since the birth is one of the most amazing things I have ever seen. It's like they have a little secret together that only they fully understand. I can see their special connection in their eyes when they're playing "tummy time" on the floor, feeding, singing and, this morning, dancing together. Ash is an amazing mother who I know would punch a moose in the face to protect her cub. Happy Mother's Day, Ash. I love you.

    The Forum - Preston Pollard

    © 2012 Brian Adams

Twice each year, the Alaska Humanities Forum publishes The Forum, a journal that features stories and projects related to the Alaska Humanities Forum. Ash and I were happy when we received word from The Forum's David Holthouse that they wanted to run our photo of skateboarder Preston Pollard. (If you look closely, on the right hand side of the image you can see Ash's hand holding the light, haha. It's barely noticeable, and I like seeing her hand in the frame, so I've kept it in.) Tummy Tuesdays: 6 Weeks Postpartum

    Photo © 2012 Brian Adams

This Tummy Tuesdays post is one that is visually not much different than postpartum weeks 5,4, and 3, but mentally, I can say that I am now determined more than ever to work a bit harder on toning the tummy in the weeks to come. At last week's 5-week postpartum visit, the capstone in the prenatal and post-pregnancy visits, my midwife, while examining my midsection, looked me in the eye and said, "I know that you stay active, but you need to be focusing on abdominal and core work now. I can still fit two fingers between your ab muscles."

That's right, ladies. When you have a baby, your muscles separate to accommodate your growing belly, and after delivery, the abdominal muscles work their way back together with time and exercise. I knew that it would take a while for this to happen, but after my midwife's loving scolding, I have been regimented in doing yoga and pilates at least once a day on top of my daily walks and occasional runs. I love yoga, and I especially love that Brian does it with me, so it's just fine to have some medical motivation on my side. This tummy will be a strong one again someday!

Another postpartum tidbit that you might find interesting pertains to the uterus. Immediately before Elliott was born, my uterus was a balloon at 42 centimeters, but now my uterus is already back down to under 5 centimeters, which apparently is itty-bitty. I had scheduled to have a Mirena IUD inserted at my postpartum visit last week, but I was unable to do so because apparently 6 centimeters is generally the smallest size that will accommodate an IUD. (7 centimeters is average.) So, as a close friend of mine put it, my uterus was able to house an 8.6lb baby but not an IUD. Bodies!

Evan Phillips - Goodnight My Dearest Stranger

    All Photos © Brian Adams

Brian and I are always on the look-out for good new music, but so often, we don't have to look very far. This is certainly the case with Anchorage sweetheart Evan Phillps' new album, Goodnight My Dearest Stranger, released in March of this year, which is comprised of ten amazing tracks that Brian and I have had on repeat for weeks. Each track is a nod to some of Phillips' earlier work with the Whipsaws and Easton Stagger Phillips, with folky strums, head nods, and hand claps, but has a whimsy that propels it somewhere else that's deeply personal. It feels like leaving, like moving on, and yet returning to home, or perhaps to one's self. We like it a lot, and we think you will, too.

    Rock on, Evan!

    Tummy Tuesdays: 5 Weeks Postpartum

    Photos © 2012 Brian Adams

There's not too much to say for this week's Tummy Tuesdays post other than that although the bulk of the baby weight has been steadily coming off with each week, the paring down has truly begun. Now it's time to really hit the trails, pull out the skateboard, and roll out the yoga mat! It's nearly summer, when I'd be doing all of these things anyways, so I'm not complaining. Go body!
